One standardized icon set for clearer medication information

When taking medicines, do you sometimes ask questions like “Can I drive while taking this medication?” or “Is it safe during pregnancy?”. Icons can get you answers to these critical questions at a glance.

To make medication information easier to understand, the Medicines Evaluation Board (CBG) is introducing one standardized set of over 50 medication icons. These icons were developed in collaboration with various partners and tested among low-literacy individuals. On 12 February, the icon set was officially presented to Minister Fleur Agema of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS).

Why one standardized set?

Currently, multiple icon sets are in use, making it difficult for patients to recognize their meanings. This lack of consistency leads to confusion and misinterpretation. That’s why the initiative “Together for Clear Medication Icons” has developed a single, unified set with accompanying texts to improve clarity and accessibility.

Where will you see these icons?

  • In pharmacy information when receiving a new prescription
  • On online pharmacy websites selling over-the-counter medicines
  • Soon on medication packaging, pharmacy & drugstore shelves, and brochures

Who can use them?

Anyone developing medication-related content – from package leaflets and online guides to videos and infographics. CBG has also updated its policy on using icons in packaging and inserts.

Important usage guidelines

  • The icons must always be accompanied by descriptive text
  • No modifications to the icons or symbols are allowed
  • The icons are available in vector (.eps, .pdf, .svg) and pixel (.png) formats, in both color and black & white
  • To use them, submit a request form specifying the required format

This public-private collaboration, coordinated by CBG, is an important step towards standardizing medication icons across Europe!
